These are not mere annoyances; they are breaches of trust. They are the cartographer’s carefully drawn coastline shifting after you've already set your course.
Willem’s solution was to carve everything in place from the start. He reserved the space. Our solution is not so different, but our medium is more dynamic. It requires the foresight to define dimensions for images and embedded content, to avoid inserting content above existing elements, and to use fonts that are loaded in a way that minimizes the inevitable swap. It is an act of cartographic discipline: we must declare the boundaries of our page’s continents and oceans before we invite the user to explore.
The quest for speed is often a loud, metric-driven race. But the pursuit of stability is a quieter, more profound art. It is the work of ensuring that once a pixel is painted, it stays put. It is about building a reliable world for the person on the other side of the screen. Willem’s sailors trusted that his maps would not change. Our users deserve the same confidence. They should be able to trust that the ground beneath their cursor will not suddenly shift, turning a simple action into a navigational error.
