The Archivist's Porous Vellum: On the Fading Text of an Over-Bundled Web
In a quiet corner of a city library, an archivist works with a kind of patience that feels alien to our world of instant delivery. She handles a manuscript from the 12th century, its vellum pages dry and fragile. The text, a copy of a Latin treatise, is remarkably intact, but in places, the ink has faded to a ghostly brown. The archivist’s greatest concern, however, isn’t the faded text she can see; it’s the text she can no longer see. Over centuries, certain inks, reacting with the organic material of the vellum, have become ‘inks of iron gall,’ slowly eating through the page. The most corrosive ink was often used for the most important words—the headings, the names of God. The very act of emphasis has, paradoxically, created a void.
This is a specific and poignant tragedy of preservation: the primary content is silently destroying its own foundation. As I considered this, my mind drifted to the modern web, to the digital vellum of our HTML documents. We, too, are guilty of applying corrosive ink. We call it ‘progressive enhancement,’ but often, it’s just the opposite. We bundle our entire application logic—the interactive headings, the reactive names—into monolithic JavaScript files. We inject them into the document, believing we are bringing it to life. And we do. But we are also, slowly, eating away at the foundation.
The tragedy is mirrored. The text—the pure, static content a user came for—is ready at the moment of First Contentful Paint. It’s there, rendered, legible. But then our script arrives. It re-renders the DOM to attach event listeners, to hydrate components, to initialize state. For a crucial, janky moment, the user’s screen is a battleground between the static document and the dynamic application. The very thing meant to enhance the experience can block the main thread, making the page unresponsive. The user tries to highlight a paragraph, but the click is swallowed by a component’s event handler. They attempt to scroll, but a layout shift occurs as a lazy-loaded image placeholder is finally replaced. The content is there, but the foundation is porous, unstable.
The archivist’s work is one of meticulous separation. She would never apply a modern adhesive directly to the vellum; she uses reversible techniques, intermediary layers. In our world, this translates to a radical re-think of our bundling strategies. It means serving truly static HTML for the core content, critical CSS that doesn’t block rendering, and JavaScript that is as lazy as our images—loaded on demand, in discreet, non-blocking chunks. It means treating the initial HTML not as a mere container to be taken over, but as the sacred text itself, to be augmented only when and where necessary.
The goal is not to abandon JavaScript, any more than the goal is to abandon ink. The goal is to use a formula that won’t consume the page from within. It is to ensure that the user’s initial, fundamental engagement with our content—the reading of it—is never compromised by the tools we use to make it interactive. We must be archivists of the immediate experience, preserving the stability of the first render against the corrosive potential of the scripts we layer on top. The most beautiful interactive feature is meaningless if the words it enhances have already faded from a user’s patience.
